The Complete Guide to Switching From Google Search to DuckDuckGo

II’ve already documented the biggest reason to switch to DuckDuckGo in the previous article. While their superb privacy and do-not-track policies are great, what sealed the deal for me were !bangs. These little modifier search keywords are really helpful if you know exactly what you’re looking for. For example, !a will search directly in Amazon.
If you want to know more about !bangs and DDG in general, you should read that article first.
Google to DuckDuckGo
Today, I’ll be talking about the process of finally ditching Google and moving on to DuckDuckGo. Sadly, it’s not as easy as flicking a switch. But the couple of minutes you spend on setting everything up will surely be worth it.

Switch the Default Search Engine

In Chrome: Surprise, surprise. Google doesn’t really make it easy to switch the default search engine to DuckDuckGo.
Get started by going to DuckDuckGo’s website and clicking the Set DuckDuckGo as your default search engine option.
DuckDuckGo Chrome Start
From the popup, click the Here button to add DDG as a search engine in Chrome.
DDG Chrome 2
Now, click the Hamburger menu button in Chrome, go to Settings -> Search and clickManage Search Engines. From here, find the entry that DuckDuckGo made. And beside it, click the Make Default button.
DuckDuckGo Chrome
If for some reason DDG isn’t able to add the entry, you can do it manually by typing inDuckDuckGo in the first box, duckduckgo.com in the second box andhttps://duckduckgo.com/?q=%s in the third.
DDG Chrome
In Safari: Apple has officially added DuckDuckGo as one of the supported search engines. That means doing this in Safari is really easy. In OS X, just go to Preferences -> Search and from the Search engine dropdown, select DuckDuckGo.
Safari DuckDuckGo
In iOS, it’s as simple as going to Settings > Safari > Search Engine, and selectingDuckDuckGo.
In Android: Chrome for Android, unfortunately, doesn’t let you add a third party search engine and DuckDuckGo isn’t on their default list. To get around that, you can useDuckDuckGo’s Android app that can replace Google Now’s swipe up from Home gesture.

How to Try it in Chrome Before Switching

If you’re not ready to switch to DDG just yet but do want to see what the hoopla is all about, there are two ways to go about it.
The easiest route is to install the DuckDuckGo extension. Click on it to perform searches directly to DDG. The extension will also infuse DDG Instant Answers and information boxes in Google searches.
The second option is to add DDG as a search engine (as I’ve shown above), give the keyword DDG and don’t make it a default. Now, just type DDG in the Omnibox, hit space, enter the term and you’ll be searching in DDG instead.

Search for (and Submit) Bangs

!bangs are the best thing about DDG, no doubt. And chances are, if a website is popular enough, it’s got a bang. There are a couple of ways to find out.
First, go to DDG’s !bangs page, scroll down and you’ll see a whole list of them. There are thousands. Either browse through or use the search button and enter a website’s name.
DDG Bangs List
Another much simpler way is to just go to DDG’s homepage, type in ! followed by the website’s name (no spaces in between).
Now, it might happen that your favorite website doesn’t have a !bang. In that case, it’s easy to take matters in your own hands. Just go to this page, fill in the relevant details and submit the request. A DDG mod will go over it and if everything’s all right, the request will be approved.
Just as Bangs, you can also contribute to DDG by coding up Instant Answers.

How to Fall Back to Google Search

It’s going to happen. Maybe a bit too often than you like. When a DDG search isn’t doing it for you, all you need to do is go to the search field, type in “!g” and press enter. Presto! The same search query will load up in Google’s encrypted search page.
DDG Google bang
If you’re more of a mouse man, this Chrome extension puts handy links to open the current search query in Google and Bing.

Master the Keyboard Shortcuts

DDG supports keyboard shortcuts and some of them are really useful. For instance, just pressing Enter after the search page has loaded will immediately open the first result.
Use the up and down arrow keys to move between search results. The left/right arrow keys will move you between different Instant Answers tabs (like images and videos). Forward slash (/) will take you to the search box (helpful for quickly typing up the !gbang) and t will take you to the top of the page. A full list of keyboard shortcuts is available here.

More DuckDuckGo Tips and Tricks

Customize the UI: Click the hamburger menu from a DDG page, go to Settings and thenTheme to switch to a whole different DDG look. From the Appearance tab, you can even change things like the font, font size, link colors and a lot more.
DuckDuckGo Themes
Privacy Settings: DDG doesn’t track you online by default so there aren’t many privacy settings to be disabled here. Although, you can turn on the Redirect option that will hide the exact search term from the website you ultimately clicked on. Also, make sure the HTTPS setting is turned on.
DDG Privacy
General Settings: The General tab has some interesting settings. You can change your region and preferred unit system. But there’s also an option to completely disable ads if you want (these ads don’t track you online and help support DDG). Plus there’s the usual stuff like safe search, auto-load and more.
That’s it from my end. If you’ve been using DuckDuckGo, do share some of your favorite !bangs and Instant Answers in the comments below.

Gionee S6 Review

Gionee's S arrangement have been emerging for style, well at any rate the greater part of them. The S5.1, the S7, the S5.5 are a percentage of the great samples and some of these were the slimmest telephones for quite a while. We had adored the extraordinary outline of the S7 and its general execution as well. This year, Gionee raises another offering the S arrangement as S6. On the off chance that you see, they have dropped the Elife moniker and calling it simply the Gionee S6. Things are marginally diverse this time around with Gionee extremely delicate about the estimating, keeping it just underneath the Rs 20k imprint furthermore going the online course for deals. How can it contrast and its ancestry? We should discover as we present to you our itemized survey of the Gionee S6.

On the off chance that it's the S arrangement from Gionee, it must be about style more than anything. While the S7 was extremely novel with its outline, the Gionee S6 shoots for style in a more inconspicuous manner yet keeping all the class its forerunners offered exceptionally in place. The configuration has a striking likeness to an Apple telephone. Envision lengthening the iPhone 5 along its length and width by a bit and voila! That is the manner by which precisely the Gionee S6 resembles, with the radio wire groups circumventing its surface. What we got is the gold adaptation and the shade picked is just one of the best we've seen. S6 is worked off metal in the structure a unidesign with 6.9mm in thickness (yes, the S6 won't get into the episode of slimmest telephones) and weighs 147g which is great job pulled off by Gionee. What's more, why do we say this? It's a major 5.5 inch telephone and one of the key difficulties here would be to keep the telephone light while giving a decent battery limit and keep the outline such that it takes into consideration less demanding independent use. This is the thing that Gionee appeared to have done well with the S6. Despite the fact that the edges are chamfered to give that sparkle, it's all delicate on the palm. It fits so well and we cherished it.

On the privilege is the pair of force and volume rockers with brilliant material criticism, the 3.5mm sound jack on the main, a double sim half breed plate on the left side and a couple of speaker grille that look like a compacted USB Type C space and a real USB Type C opening at the base. Onto the back is the 13MP camera with the LED streak. The front games a trio of capacitive catches that don't illuminate (bummer boundlessness times) and a 5MP camera onto the front with a closeness sensor close by. The 5.5-inch presentation is an AMOLED screen however is just of HD (720p) determination with 267 ppi. Obviously shows Gionee scarified the FHD screen to keep the general costs low. On the positive side, its ensured by Gorilla Glass 3 and because of the energetic Amigio UI, the screen ain't dull. Hues pop out so brilliant and are so over-soaked that if you somehow managed to utilize the telephone for quite a while at a stretch, you may have a slight blemish. Under the sun, it's difficult to peruse on the screen that is extremely intelligent. Be that as it may, seeing points are great while utilizing it inside.

Gionee being aware of holding expenses under control is seen with things in the engine also. An Octacore Mediatek MT6753 chipset timed at 1.3 GHz is the thing that runs the S6. This processor is entirely old and is generally embraced by section level phablets. Thankfully, 3GB RAM discovers its direction and a 32GB of inside memory give some redeeming quality to the S6. It can likewise suit as much as 128 GB in its microSD opening on the half and half sim plate. A 3150 mAh battery will give juice to the S6 that keep running on Amigo UI 3.1 worked off Android 5.1 Lollipop. In our 3 weeks of utilization, we never experienced any significant hiccups, however there are events where the thick UI with those moves backed off by a small amount of a second yet that is simply nitpicking. Our fears of the huge Amigo UI running on a midrange processor were disposed of inside the initial 48 hours of utilizing it. The subject store has huge amounts of choices now and every single topic is well weave – something that we have come to see on the MIUI which has its quality there. There are huge amounts of pre-stacked amusements and applications and fortunately you can uninstall them. By and large, it's the standard Amigo UI we've found in the late telephones from Gionee simply that this one on the S6 is by all accounts all around improved. One of our top choices is this clock gadget where satellite spins around a planet and a super energized kid watches it – pleasant touch by Gionee.

Gaming too was nice, because of the AMOLED screen, visual experience was appropriate for gaming and the S6 hinted at no over-warming. Be that as it may, there were cases where temperatures spiked to 44 deg C for reasons unknown, yet fortunately this was only an exemption. Top of the line diversions welled with that infrequent stammer amid extend periods of time of gaming. The sound yield on the amplifiers could utilize some change at its maximum volumes. Furthermore, the position of the speakers are precarious and get secured by your palms when playing. On the flipside however, the battery life descended by 30+% for consistently we gamed.

Talking about battery, the Gionee S6 has a 3150 mAh limit battery and one can without much of a stretch get past a day with moderate utilization and we got great Screen-on-Times of 4.5 to 5 hours with Wifi/4G on throughout the day, a hour of calls, WhatsApp, twitter and Facebook throughout the day and some gaming as well. The Gionee S6 is kind of future safe with the USB sort C yet terrible on the accommodation side if there aren't numerous links around the spots you move.

gionee-s6-survey 6

The 13MP camera on the Gionee S6 inspired us a great deal with its f/2.0 opening. Profundity of field is great, full scale shots came well and the handling too is quick. On occasion it battles on concentrating yet it is still sensible. Low light conditions present some clamor however that hostile to shake highlight with the HDR mode enhanced the quality. The front camera too makes a not too bad showing with regards to however now and again the presentation taking care of leaves whack and passes over selfies. The camera application has some cool components like Magic Focus for conforming center post preparing, GIF Maker for fast activity, and the Image Plus for beautification and Eraser mode that gives one a chance to dispose of things they'd not have any desire to find in the snaps.

Coming at Rs 19,999, Gionee has compromised on its most recent S arrangement telephone the S6. It wells on the style, plan, and not too bad execution in all offices. In any case, then it does not have a unique mark scanner, and that is the thing that will set it back when contrasted and the opposition, particularly the Lenovo Vibe X3 which is a shocking offering coming at the same cost with a superior screen, sound yield, camera and finger impression scanner. There are different telephones like the Coolpad Note 3, Lenovo K4 Note having the same processor and RAM limit offered at not as much as a large portion of the cost, obviously they may fall behind on the assemble and outline front. At that point there's the LeEco Le 1s which looks hazardously like Gionee S6 and seemingly conveys a superior processor. Be that as it may, what emerges in the S6 is the AMOLED screen, yet would one purchase it only for that screen? All things considered, that is a call you have to take. In case you're hoping to purchase one, the Gionee S6 comes in gold shading and is sold on Flipkart solely for Rs 19,999.

Samsung Galaxy A5 and Galaxy A7 (2016) Review

SSamsung’s flagship phones in the Galaxy range are one of the most anticipated releases year after year and always pack the best possible hardware in them, and also come at a very premium price. But not everyone requires so much power. What if someone needed all the style and build that the flagship phones have, but can do with midrange specifications from within? What if some yearn for stylish and well built phones but cannot afford a flagship? The “A” series is what Samsung has for them that we saw do pretty well last year, but they had few issues. Stepping up in making the corrections, Samsung has launched the A5 and A7’s 2016 version. We did feel some improvements when we presented to you our first impressions, but how did the phones perform in real life? Find out as we unveil our detail review of the duo.
galaxy-a5-a7-review-3
Both phones are so much alike and have more similarities than differences, and hence we’ve clubbed the review but will call out differences when appropriate.
We were impressed by the style, the design and the elements used in building the phones during our initial impressions and that stays. Both phones sport exact same looks and in some angles resemble Samsung’s S6 series. As a matter of fact, we had some friends coming and asking us if we got the S6 and in some cases it was us successfully fooling others in having them think we had the S6 – mission accomplished Samsung! We still maintain that the phones are extremely slippery and if you’re not careful enough, you will end up dropping the phone (though the back comes with a Gorilla Glass 4 protection). The edges of the phone have the matte finish and tend to peel off (bit by bit) over a period time – instantly remind us of the Galaxy S4 and Note 3’s edges. And we cannot tell you how convenient the front home-button plus fingerprint scanner is! You don’t have to lift it off a surface to unlock it, which is the case in most of the phones these days with the FPS placed at the back. Setting it up takes a little longer, but once you’re done, it works like charm and is fast enough. The duo of very well backlit capacitive buttons accompanying the home button, bring a delight. The A5 and A7 are not lightweight phones by any means owing to the amount of metal and glass in their build, and higher sized batteries they pack as compared to their predecessors. While both come at 7.3mm thick, the A5 weighs 155gms while the A7 weighs 172 gms – doesn’t go well with a highly slippery back surface they sport with our friend gravity pulling them down.
galaxy-a5-a7-review-4
Both phones sport an awesome Super AMOLED displays protected by Gorilla Glass 4. There are couple of differences though – the A5 has a 5.2” screen packing 424 pixels while the A7 has a 5.5” screen packing a lesser 401 pixel density. Nonetheless both phones provide good viewing angles, decent visibility under sunlight and one of the best touch sensitivities/experience we’ve come to see. Colors pop up, everything is presented with good sharpness. The surface however is prone to smudges and fingerprints; you will find yourself hunting for a piece of cloth to get off them periodically.
galaxy-a5-a7-review-6
What the gorgeous display is trying to present to you is Samsung’s home-grownTouchwiz UI built off Android Lollipop 5.1. This is very disappointing to see when Samsung is asking a price that is tad lesser than the flagships but saving their Marshmallow build for the S7 series. While the new Touchwiz does sport new looks, the typical blue and green themed UI remains. What is not new is the tiny lags and stutters that have plagued Touchwiz from the time it was born and this can get really irritating. The screen just freezes for a good 2-3 seconds regardless of what you’re doing and it takes away the good experience as it occurs at least 5-8 times a day. The OS though doesn’t have much bloatware like before, but stutters while going from one page to another. All of this is seen more as compared to the S6 series, thanks to a midrange processor in the form of Exynos 7580 Octacore processor clocked at 1.6GHz and a 16GB of internal memory of which around 9GB is available to the user. Thankfully this can be expanded upto 128GB via the microSD slot. And this performance is regardless of the RAM capacity on the phones – the A5 has 2GB while the A7 has 3GB.
But there are tons of good stuff as well! Samsung’s theme store is now rich with tons of options and you can get rid of every pixel of the Touchwiz feel applying the theme you want. You can also give it a material design driven theme that will completely change its look to make it look like stock Android! The swipe over the screen to take screen shots, double tapping the home button to launch the camera even when the screen is locked, allowing dual windows on the screen, and being able to change the grid size on the home screen – very good features that work really well.
galaxy-a5-a7-review-11
The stutters return while you game on the phones. It doesn’t matter if it’s a light game or a heavy game – there are periodic stutters and some frame drops during elongated periods of gaming. And the position of the tiny loudspeaker at the bottom is so bad that most of the times it gets covered by your palm and you have to program your hands not to do so. On the brighter side of things was the delivery of colors on the screen and no heating issues. Though the phones sport metal and glass build all over the place, the temperatures never exceeded 44 degrees Celsius. Battery drain was kept at check and was not an issue at all. Speaking about the battery, it is one of the top 3 things you will love about both the phones. “Highly reliable” is what we will term the battery here. Regardless of what task you’re at with the phones, they consistently deliver a full day juice. For those who care too much about the screen on times, we got anywhere between 4.5 to 5.5 hours on both the phones though they hold different capacities – the A5 comes with 2900 mAh while the A7 comes with 3300 mAh.
Connectivity was non-issue on both the phones that come with dual sim slots. One tray holds a sim and a microSD card while the other tray holds another sim. It would’ve been better if one tray housed two sims and the other held the microSD card. Signal reception was commendable, so was the call quality – loud and crisp. Calls while on the loudspeaker too were decent enough, with no crackling or distortion while on max volumes.
The flagship phones on Samsung’s Galaxy series are always known for their rock solid camera performance. Well, if you expect that from the same camera module the A5 and A7 house, you’re in for a disappointment. They both sport a 13MP primary shooterwith LED flash and f/1.9 aperture and OIS support. On paper this should provide you some stunning pictures but in reality things were different. In good daylight, pictures come just fine at best. Exposure handling is real bad and you can see many portions of the pictures being overblown or excessively warmed up. This really cracks a very well working color reproduction going on. Dynamic range needs good amount of correction too while there is an abundance of digital sharpening that can be noticed.

As the lights go down, the camera performance worsens. Tons of grains find their way and the OIS is doing precious little to reduce the blurriness. Where the OIS shines is in the video department. The front 5MP also comes with f/1.9 aperture and does just fine again. The camera app is typical Samsung, with tons of options like Panorama, HDR and cool filters. Processing again is a tad slow like we’ve always seen. It would be really great if Samsung makes up their mind to fix these issues which mostly seem to be on the software. It’s a shame to see such a good camera hardware not being provided with a software that can use its abilities to the fullest.
galaxy-a5-a7-review-12
The Galaxy A5 is priced around Rs 22,999 while the Galaxy A7 comes for Rs 32,999. These prices are certainly not “budget friendly”. But then, the A5 and A7 are bringing their A game here, apart from an appealing design and build, both phones delivery amazing battery performance and keep temperatures at check during all the heavy tasks. But what one will hold the phones against is the general notion of Samsung’s mid and high range phones to be wicked awesome when it comes to the camera department. Lags and stutters are forgiven owing to the Touchwiz’s reputation. But if Samsung were to really fix the camera issues and take its performance a few notches above, then the A5 and A7 will pack a punch and justify their price. Speaking about the competition and if you are not hell bent on glossy design, Lenovo’s Vibe X3 is a stunning all rounder performer for just Rs 19,999. There is also OnePlus 2 that holds decent looks and good on camera performance for Rs 24,999. But if you were to hang in there for a month or two, Xiaomi is bringing their A game alive with the Mi5 which we believe is going to shake and rock the charts with its style and performance.

Xiaomi Mi 5 torture test. Very Easy To Break

The Xiaomi Mi 5 is the most recent and best cell phone from the Chinese organization's steady.
